advice verbosa

we have been thinking all weekend of this dear reader, who inquired last week after bras and ranties’ humble opinion on the next move in her work (slash life) adventure. we uncharacteristically chose to sit with our answer for a while, for fear our propensity for risk and action may not be the optimal strategy for most. but every which way we put our mind to it, we came back to the same answer.

yes. you should quit your job. you should do it today.

some of you sit at your desk this moment, reading bras and ranties for a snack of the real world. a moment to forget the eight (nine, ten) hour grinds that your job consists of. whichever way you slice it, your job sucks.

the fact of the matter is that few (if any) will realize great success while working for someone else. companies are, in their essence, a pyramid scheme. those at the top win, in all definitions of the word. because it’s their own.

once this realization sets in, the stirrings and desires to move, create and experiment start to pick up force. they may be specific ideas, but in all likelihood it’s just a feeling. and therein lies the biggest fear (and misconception) of all. leave the fear behind: the whole point is that you don’t know what’s next. each one of us has been funelled from an undoubtedly rigorous school system straight into the workforce. someone’s been telling us what to do the whole time – the concept of choice usually narrowed to a very specific consideration set. fuck that.

consider if your skills are marketable in a freelance capacity and how many hours worth of work you need to pay the bills. build up your racket and away you go. and if your skill set isn’t one that that can make you money? then you should really be listening.

award yourself the ability to explore your whims and curiosities while they’re still there, because we have a feeling they fade if continually ignored. have the confidence to walk away and see where you end up. see what you’re capable of. see what you’re made of. good luck to you.

whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. boldness has a genius, power and magic in it. goethe

    Dear Bras and Ranties,

Thank you for the advice. I don't disagree with you – it is just difficult to take that first step.

Today reading blog at la work… tomorrow world domination (maybe/hopefully)???

In the meantime, might have figured out how to run an existing company.

    Thanks,
    Quitting Soon
